The Young Spinner Makes Surprise Selection in English Ashes Squad
England have chosen a 12-man selection just 48 hours before the opening Test match, with Shoaib Bashir securing a surprise spot.
The 22-year-old’s inclusion indicates that the visiting team will delay until the morning of the initial match to determine whether the venue pitch favor four seamers or the addition of a spinner.
Both pace bowlers are part of the selected group, indicating there are no concerns about either fast bowler's condition.
The other seamers round out the attack, with the latter expected to miss out if Bashir enters the final team.
Ground Conditions Lean Toward Seamers
Brendon McCullum had been expected to choose an pace-only lineup on a ground that has hosted several previous Tests.
During these games, the majority of dismissals have fallen to pace bowling, with only a small number to spin bowling.
Of those spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has taken 29, while overseas slow bowlers combined have only eight.
At a venue renowned for its speed and carry, and whose groundsman, the pitch preparer, pledged that these traits are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a team loaded with fast bowlers remains the probable choice.
Alternative Choices Weighed
There had been speculation that the all-rounder could be brought into the side to provide some slow bowling while additionally strengthening the batting lineup.
But McCullum has opted to stick with Bashir, having said previously that he would be his preferred slow bowler for the Ashes.
In July, Lyon described Bashir as “OK,” adding that “in my eyes, the experienced spinner is still England’s best spinner.”
“It is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for people who lack experience in the past in Australian pitches,” he said of spin bowling in matches Down Under.
“I’m not going to reveal my strategies so opponents perform and excel out here.”
