The opening ball in an Ashes contest represents significantly more than simply a single pitch.
It signifies a nerve-wracking three to three moments filled with sheer excitement, where every bit of pre-contest hype ultimately concludes.

Far more typically they have been ominous signs regarding Australia's control that would be ahead.
On the 2021-22 tour, Mitchell Starc dismissed English opener Rory Burns with a leg-stump half-volley in the Gabba becoming the initial pitcher claiming a dismissal on the opening delivery in a series after Australian seamer Ernest McCormick during 1936.
The English build-up had been lacking so in that moment during Aussie jubilation the tourists took a punch to the stomach.

Steve Waugh and Australia aimed for a fourth Ashes victory consecutively when opener Michael Slater started 1994's contest by decisively hitting England seamer Phil DeFreitas to boundary through the offside.
"It was like 'alright boys we're off once more we have dominated now'," recalled the captain, who'd feature all five matches in a 3-1 home victory.
"Psychologically it felt like we're on top now and we should continue hammering away. We know how to defeat this team."

"I tensed," the bowler told journalists soon after.
"I allowed the enormity of the moment get to me. It all seemed so alien to me. My entire body felt tense."

The English claimed the 2005 Ashes fifteen before but were comprehensively defeated 5-0. Some contend that Ashes were lost at that exact moment.
