The people of Israel mark two-year remembrance of 7 October incident as Gaza ceasefire talks continue
Israelis have assembled around the country to mark two years since the Hamas-initiated offensive on 7 October 2023, as discussions proceeded in Egypt over a conclusion to the war in Gaza.
The incident resulted in over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely most lethal day for Jews since the Holocaust.
Israel responded by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are considered reliable by the UN and other world agencies.
"The violent opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "realize all the aims of the war: the release of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the assurance that Gaza will no longer present a risk to Israel".
Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel
The Israeli government postponed state commemorations until October 16th - after the completion of the festive season - but gatherings still took place throughout the country on that day.
A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of Israelis killed in the Hamas attack was organized in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the affected families, it was broadcast on Israeli broadcast stations.
Some time earlier, a silent tribute was respected around the country.
Peace Discussions in Egypt
At the same time, both sides' negotiating teams gathered in the Egyptian coastal city of the negotiation venue for a second day of mediated discussions to review the terms of the agreement.
A senior representative involved in the discussions indicated that an night meeting of mediated discussions commenced at 7 PM local time.
The representative stated the day's discussions finished without significant progress, amid conflicting views over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not restart hostilities after the opening period of the agreement.
He added that the discussions are "tough and have not yet produce any major advancement," but noted that intermediaries are striving to close the gaps between the conflicting groups.
Critical Points in Negotiations
- A permanent truce
- The exchange of the captives still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The pullout of troops from Gaza
- Arrangements for assistance deliveries
- Future management of the area
Civilian Feeling
In Tel Aviv's public square earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member survived the attack on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were murdered and many more were abducted by Hamas fighters - shared: "No location appears as home any longer and until each abducted person are released not a single person will be secure."
"Once we see all home returned, we can relax anew. Then we can begin to heal," she added.
In front of the leader's residence in Jerusalem, people congregated to demonstrate their support for the families of the captives. Israel states nearly fifty stay in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be surviving.
Activist one woman explained: "We need do every compromise required for the hostages to be released. But we really want promises that we will be safe."
Surveys now consistently show that approximately seventy percent of the population prefer the war to end in exchange for the freedom of the abducted.
Gaza Conditions
At the area of Nova festival, those paying respects gathered to honor the dead.
From the site, the noise of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people said the severe Israeli attacks persisted.
In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were noted in the early hours of that day in the western district, sector and zone neighbourhoods and in the east side area of the community, as well the settlement to the north-west.
"As the night arrives, the anxiety appears with it," displaced urban resident a mother, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli air strike last year, shared.
"My family are fearful of the bombings. During nighttime we are sleeping together, clinging, particularly my youngest child who puts his face on me all night."
"Constantly we check the reports to see developments. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the war will resume to us."
Humanitarian Situation
The medical facility in the urban area announced it had accepted the bodies of six people by the midday, including three killed in an Israeli attack in the southern district.
Nasser hospital in the south region of Khan Younis reported additional fatalities had been delivered. An individual was died by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get help to the southern area, medics said.
