The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Knows How Pluribus Will End... At the Moment.
The acclaimed writer-producer could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would become a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
With the first season of the hit program wrapping up—and the next chapter officially in the works—Gilligan and his team opened up about the audience reaction and whether it will influence the future direction of Pluribus.
About the Overwhelming Audience Reaction
One could easily to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and audience predictions surrounding Pluribus. He is doing his best to ignore the noise.
“It's like being an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it from others, and that's on purpose. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
In spite of trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We make no attempt to change the plot,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by audience chatter.”
“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.
The Big Question: Will the creator See the Finale of Pluribus?
So if Gilligan and his team aren’t being guided by public opinion, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… in a way.
“We've developed some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” he states. “but we are always ready to abandon a solid concept for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
On the other hand, if all else fails, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.
“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” Smith quips, “but no one is buying it.”
Of course, why mess with the legendary finales?
“My dream is Carol to open her eyes beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
