Slot Maintains He Is Safe and Has Liverpool's Support After PSV Humiliation
The Liverpool head coach conceded that it's natural for concerns to be raised about his position after a further convincing defeat against PSV Eindhoven.
Liverpool suffered their ninth loss in 12 games, representing the team's poorest streak since being demoted in the 1953-54 season.
They were dominated by the Eredivisie champions on a difficult night at their home ground.
“I'm confident, I am OK, I have got plenty of backing from above,” Slot commented.
“It's important to turn it around and get a victory obviously but if you are coaching a team and struggling then it's expected that people question you.”
He continued, “I accept my role. It is not the initial instance I've found myself in a challenging situation but it's crucial that we turned it around.”
Talks with Club Management
Upon being questioned to elaborate on his dialogues with the team officials, Slot said:
“We talk a lot. They are helpful for the squad and to me and we have those conversations but they don't phone me constantly of the day to say they back me.”
He added, “During our regular exchanges I perceive the trust. However I've not talked to them after this match so far so it remains to be seen.”
Recurring Failings and Squad Reaction
The manager lamented familiar failings from his Liverpool side in their Champions League loss, namely wasted chances and leaking goals.
Meanwhile, player Curtis Jones was more forthright in his assessment of the current crisis.
“I don’t have the answers. Frankly, I do not. I’m saying that to everybody,” Jones remarked.
“It is unacceptable. I don’t even need to wait to reflect. I’m past being angry internally. I've reached the stage currently where I simply lack the phrases.”
He added, “It's difficult because I play for the side I follow. I'm a supporter, and I've watched this club since I was young.”
“In recent memory, I've not seen a Liverpool team experiencing a period such as this with performances this poor.”
He concluded, “However we still have the emblem on our chest. And as long as that badge is removed, we'll continue to battle.”
“We will attempt to help the side back to its rightful place, prove again what Liverpool stands for and why it's known as the top club in the world.”
“At this moment, things are bad and we have to turn it around.”
