Offspring of Former South African Leader Zuma Rejects Terror-Related Accusations as Court Case Commences
The daughter of former South African President Jacob G Zuma has denied all charges to terror allegations at the commencement of her legal proceedings in the coastal city of Durban city.
The defendant, 43 years old, is being prosecuted over comments she made on digital networks four years ago during fatal demonstrations in South Africa that came after the arrest of her father.
A seven-day period of anarchy in multiple regions of the country in July 2021, including plundering and intentional burning, resulted in at least three hundred dead and resulted in damage worth an estimated 2.8 billion dollars (£2.2bn).
Zuma-Sambudla has been accused of inciting this turmoil and is charged with charges of provocation to commit terrorism and public violence.
History of the Proceedings
The unrest were focused in the provinces of the Gauteng province and KwaZulu-Natal province and were triggered by the previous president's arrest for ignoring a legal directive to give evidence at an investigation into allegations of corruption while he was serving as president.
Ms Zuma-Sambudla has repeatedly denied the accusations against her, with her lawyer in the past calling the prosecution's legal argument as insufficient.
She has also frequently claimed the accusations against her were an bid to address political disputes with her dad after he started his own political organization and competed against the ruling party.
Support and Case Arguments
This was echoed by the foundation, which said the case was an "abuse of power" and a "organized effort" of "politically motivated and kinship harassment" against the former president and his kin.
A handful of backers from her group, the political party, appeared outside the judicial building, while her father and other group representatives participated in the proceedings inside.
The defense has stated that the testimony presented by the state is unconvincing and fails to provide concrete grounds for a guilty verdict.
