NY Unveils Portal for Citizens to Submit Immigration Videos Following Detentions of 4 US Citizens
The state attorney general has launched a recent digital platform encouraging citizens to submit images and footage of immigration raids across the state. This action comes just a day after a significant ICE raid shook NYC's Chinatown, prompting large-scale protests.
American Citizens Detained In Raid
A US congressman disclosed during a Wednesday press conference that four citizens were detained and kept for "nearly 24 hours" following Tuesday's raid. Rallies broke out in NYC on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
"Each citizen deserves to reside free from terror," state officials declared in a statement.
"Anyone who observed and documented ICE activity during the raid, I urge you to share that evidence with us. We are dedicated to assessing these submissions and determining any wrongdoings."
Submission Process
The portal offers options to submit photos and videos of the operation, along with a section to specify geographic details. Before submitting, individuals must check a box that states that "authorities might employ any materials, images, or footage in a official report, such as in a lawsuit or official statement."
Details of the Manhattan Operation
The Chinatown raid, which observers say featured over fifty federal agents, occurred in a famous neighborhood of NYC where fake products and other goods are commonly traded in large quantities – often to tourists.
Recordings of the incident reveal multiple covered and weaponized federal agents securing and holding a person, and forcing aside bystanders. Throngs of residents followed the personnel down the sidewalks. An armored military vehicle was observed moving along the urban roads.
Political Response
In a midweek briefing featuring the immigrant advocacy group, Representative Goldman, a Democrat, said that four US citizens were arrested by immigration for almost a full day and that there were "no circumstances where four American citizens should be detained for without cause." He noted the persons were freed on Wednesday with no legal action taken.
"The intent is obvious here. It is not about removing offenders," Goldman remarked. "This is a militarized effort to incite tension. It is merely a pretext to generate turmoil for the government to utilize the troops to stop conflict that they initiated."
Broad Criticism
Anger over the ICE raid rapidly grew – all three mayoral candidates criticized the raid, as did Governor Kathy Hochul.
"Yet again, the federal government chooses authoritarian theatrics that create fear, rather than security. It needs to cease," a contender wrote.
NYC advocacy organizations voiced concern too.
"ICE raided Chinatown in NYC with military-style vehicles, masked agents and tactical gear to go after small merchants trying to make a living. This action had nothing to do with citizen protection and was entirely about frightening communities and neighborhoods," remarked the president of a rights organization.
Official Guidelines
Official guidelines forbids the arrest of American nationals and the organization has stated it will not take into custody citizens. Nevertheless, investigative journalism has found that numerous US citizens have been held against their will by ICE since the start of the current administration.
Ongoing Trend
Immigration operations have been cropping up increasingly in NY and around the country recently.
An October operation in midtown Manhattan was the first known raid on an immigrant shelter of the present government. Demonstrations opposing federal operations are commonplace including allegations of violence and abusive practices.
Recently, a document filed by civil rights groups claimed healthcare failures of pregnant women in ICE facilities.
