Chainsaw Man Dominates the U.S. Box Office in First Weekend
Has Sony achieved another hit? In the wake of the triumph of the hit anime Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which earned over $600 million globally, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has reached beyond the $100M mark worldwide, hitting a worldwide gross of $108 million in its opening frame. This movie surpassed Black Phone 2 ($12.9 million) in its sophomore frame in movie houses, as well as Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere starring Jeremy Allen White ($9 million).
Strong Domestic and Global Results
Helmed by director Tatsuya Yoshihara, the movie is a straightforward follow-up of Chainsaw Man’s first season. It brought in over $18 million in North America after a powerful five-point-two-million-dollar Saturday box office and $4.5M Sunday. Overseas, the MAPPA-produced feature grossed $14.7M across 46 global regions, bringing its global earnings to $60.4M under Sony ($43.1M international, $18.2 million in the U.S.). Sony has yet to announce its complete box office tally.
Parallels to Other Anime Hits
Promotional firm White Box Entertainment noted in prior discussions, contrasting the film’s projected performance to Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which earned $34 million in the domestic market in 2022 and opened to a nearly identical eighteen million dollars stateside. This movie's first weekend aligns with that benchmark, while its $108M global gross currently tracks a bit short of Jujutsu Kaisen 0’s $166.6M overall box office. Even if it doesn't seem possible Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc will achieve the earnings seen by blockbuster the record-breaking Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, it remains a significant success for the distributor.
Fan Engagement Strategies Fuel Performance
The studio and its partner the anime streaming service Crunchyroll have skillfully used community involvement to boost their dominance at the anime box office. The movie's promotional efforts launched at the Anime Expo in LA in July with a discussion featuring MAPPA, special events, and Pochita photo ops, then continued with a major presence at NYCC featuring exclusive clips, lotteries for fans, and more MAPPA sessions. Additionally, there was an private showing for enthusiasts for the public and popular figures too after the last day of the convention.
Future Prospects
2025 stands as a major time for animated films, and for the company, which has an additional feature-length anime debuting in the coming months in the upcoming Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in late this year.
