It is a Friday evening at half past seven, but instead of heading to the pub or relaxing at home, I've caught a train to a town in the countryside to meet up with volunteers from a amphibian rescue group. These dedicated individuals sacrifice their nights to protect the native amphibian community.

An Alarming Drop in Population

These groups collect toads and transport them over streets in buckets, as well as counting the number of toads they encounter and lobbying for other safety solutions, such as road closures and underground wildlife tunnels.

Volunteers usually work during the breeding period, when toad crossings are frequent. However, this means they can overlook numbers of young toads, which, having been eggs and then tadpoles, exit their water habitats over an irregular timetable in late summer.
