Can the UK's Common Toads Survive from Roads and Population Collapse?

It is a Friday evening at half past seven, but instead of heading to the pub or relaxing at home, I've caught a train to a town in the countryside to meet up with volunteers from a amphibian rescue group. These dedicated individuals sacrifice their nights to protect the native amphibian community.

An Alarming Drop in Population

The Bufo bufo is becoming increasingly rare. A latest study conducted by an wildlife conservation group showed that the British common toad numbers have almost halved since 1985. Seeing a creature that has been a stalwart of the UK landscape in decline is labeled "concerning" by researchers. Toads "don't need very specific conditions" and "should be able to live quite well in most of habitats in the UK," meaning if even they are struggling to persist, "it kind of suggests that things are not as they should be."

Since 1985, Britain's toad numbers have nearly been cut in half

The Threat from Traffic

Though the research didn't cover the reasons for the decline, cars is a major factor. Estimates indicate that 20 tons of toads are killed on UK roads every year – in other words, several hundred thousand. Unlike frogs, which would probably be content to mate "with just a bucket of water," toads prefer big bodies of water. Their capacity to stay out of water for longer than frogs means they can travel further to find them – often hundreds of metres. They usually stick to their ancestral migration routes – it's typical for adult toads to go back to their birth pond to mate.

Breeding Habits

Appropriately enough, the initial amphibians start their journey for a mate around Valentine's day, but some move as late as spring, waiting until it gets night and travelling after sunset. During that time, toads begin migrating from where they have been hibernating "all pretty much at the same time."

A local helper, who was raised in the region and has been trying to protect its toad population since he was a boy, explains that "Their sole purpose: to go and mate." If their path crosses a street, they could be killed by traffic, and that mating period would be lost – stopping a new generation of toads from being produced.

Rescue Groups Across the United Kingdom

Seeing hundreds of dead toads on local roads "inherently strikes a chord with people," and has led to the formation of toad patrols throughout the UK – 274 groups are officially listed with a national initiative. These groups collect toads and transport them over streets in buckets, as well as counting the number of toads they encounter and lobbying for other safety solutions, such as road closures and underground wildlife tunnels.

Volunteers usually work during the breeding period, when toad crossings are frequent. However, this means they can overlook numbers of young toads, which, having been eggs and then tadpoles, exit their water habitats over an irregular timetable in late summer. Because of their size – just one or two centimetres wide – "they are destroyed by car traffic." And as being run over "basically turns them into mush," it's more difficult to get data on them. At least when mature amphibians are killed, their remains can be counted.

Annual Efforts

In contrast to many groups, a specific volunteer group, who are in their eighth year of functioning, go out throughout the year – not every night, but when weather are warm and wet, or if someone has reported about a amphibian spotting in their messaging app. When I ask to join them on patrol, they concede it is "not ideal conditions" – winter dormancy has begun and it's been a arid period – but a few of the volunteers willingly accept to walk up and down their route with me and see what we can find. "Should anyone can find any toads tonight, that pair will spot one," says the group coordinator, indicating her teenage child and the experienced member. After for two hours without a single toad sighting, and now they have climbed over a barbed wire fence to check under some wood.

Community Participation

The mother and son became part of the patrol a while back. The youngster loves all things nature-related and has an ambition to become a environmentalist, so his mother started to look for things they could do together to help local wildlife. Now she loves it as much as he does, the middle-aged small business owner tells me – so when the team was seeking a new manager lately, she volunteered for the role.

The teenager, too, has played an important role in the organization. A clip he made, imploring the municipal authority to block a road through a nature reserve during migration season, swung the decision the group's way. After a year of lobbying, the council approved an "access-only" restriction between 5pm and 5am from February through to April. The majority of motorists respected and avoided the route.

Additional Species and Challenges

A few vehicles go by when I'm out on patrol and we discover some casualties as a consequence – no amphibians, but several crushed salamanders. We see one living newt as well, and the teenager is particularly pleased to see a harvestman, which dances in his palms. Yet in spite of the team's hardest attempts to show me a toad, the native community has obviously settled down for the colder months. It appears that I couldn't have found any better success anywhere else in the nation – all the rescue teams I contact explain that it's very difficult at this time of year.

They project rescuing nearly 10,000 grown amphibians during migration

A message I receive from a different helper, who has kindly taken the trouble to check for toads in a noted location, thought to be the largest accurately monitored toad group in the UK, reaches me with the subject line: "No toads." However, in late winter, he tells me, the team plans to assist around 10,000 adult toads over the street.

Impact and Challenges

How much of a difference can these groups truly achieve? "The fact that volunteers are doing this consistently on chilly, wet and miserable evenings is remarkable," notes an researcher. "That's something that very much deserves recognition." However, while toad patrols are able to slow the decline, they can't stop it completely – not least because traffic is not the only threat.

Other Dangers

The climate crisis has meant extended spells of drought, which create the wrong conditions for some of the animals that toads eat, such as invertebrates, while higher water temperatures have led to an rise of toxic plants, which can be harmful to toads. Warmer cold seasons also lead toads to emerge from their dormancy more frequently, disrupting the energy conservation crucial to their existence. Habitat destruction – especially the loss of big water bodies – is another menace.

Researchers are "always a bit worried about overemphasizing practical benefits on biodiversity," however "It's important in just their presence." But toads do have an important role in the ecosystem, eating pretty much any small creatures or tiny organisms they can fit in their mouths and in turn sustaining a variety of predators, such as hedgehogs and otters. Enhancing conditions for toads – such as building water habitats, conserving woodland and installing toad tunnels – "benefits for a whole bunch of other species."

Historical Significance

An additional motive to try to keep toads present is their "important cultural value," adds an expert. Myths and folklore around toads date back {centuries|hundred
